May the Fourth Be With You!

John Williams’ Star Wars score is iconic, totally mesmerising and believe it or not was all created before the dawn of the DAW!  Apparently people used to call it manuscript paper and I’m also told that you needed something called a pen too?  I’ve no idea what that is but it sounds old!  Thank goodness I have Logic Pro and not a pen, the bit I struggle with though is the genius of Williams but I’ll keep trying as I know the forth is with me! (Sorry couldn’t resist the cheesy line!)

Sound Design

Sound Design is part of my day job and something I kind of fell into.  I love it when work comes my way that requires new sound design, it can at times be more expressive and has more freedom than writing music, you really have to think hard about creating something unique and original when it comes to sound design.  Often my work forces me to think creatively about what sounds I can record and then warp once inside Logic X.  I’ve recorded everything from bins, trays, toys, marbles, tables, tuned and untuned instruments to find a new ways of expressing sound.

Always learning

I love it when I discover other sound designers that are both inventive and forward thinking it’s inspiring and I’m always on the look out for learning something new, perhaps new ways  of thinking about creating my own sounds; there’s always something new to learn and discover.

So being ‘May the Forth..’ with all things Star Wars on my mind check out this very cool video by AJ Afterparty who has worked out how to reproduce the voice of Kylo Ren using Logic Pro X and some plugins.  Like my previous blog True or False I talked about every plugin you have is there for a reason and to be used at some point, AJ makes great use of an extensive plugin chain to get very close to the Kylo Ren sound design vocal effect.

Check it out!

Use the mic Luke!

So if the sound design stuff doesn’t float your boat or suitably impress you then this will at least give you a bit of entertainment! Poor Luke is all by himself but thankfully Ren makes it to him with the one thing he needs to be complete … a microphone and a Celine Dion song!
